Donautor

The Gate "Donautor" was built in the 13th century. On the north side of the tower gate, you can see Kelheim’s first coat of arms with the Bavarian lozenges suspended between the Tower "Altmühltor" and the Gate "Mittertor". Beginning in the 15th century, this Gate served as the customs house. Taxes were levied on every wagon that passed into the city here. The four original smaller towers that were once attached are gone now, but part of the original battlement with a machicolation is still visible. The two carved stone lions from the old Wittelsbacher Castle were placed here in 1913.
