Ludwigsplatz

Ludwigsplatz

"Ludwigsplatz" serves as the town plaza. It stretches in an easterly direction from the main intersection to the Old City center. The two main streets form a cross, dividing the city into four quarters, according to the wishes of the Wittelsbacher Dukes in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. At the east end of the square stands a memorial to King Ludwig I. of Bavaria. He stands in his coronation robes, holding the plans for the Befreiungshalle (Liberation Hall). This statue was commissioned in memory of King Ludwig I as the builder of the Befreiungshalle. The fountain located near the New City Hall symbolizes the joining of the rivers Danube, Altmühl and the Danube Canal; the seven-meter high column dedicated to the Virgin Mary was erected in 1700.
