Abbey Weltenburg

The Benedictine Abbey at Weltenburg was founded around the year 600 by Columba monks and stands on the site of an earlier Bronze Age temple in the vicinity of the Danube Gorge. The abbey, as it now stands, was constructed by the Abbot, Maurus Bächl, from 1716 to 1739, following hundreds of years of water damage and pillaging. The church was decorated by the brother artists Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam. The baroque interior is "Theatrum Sacrum" at its finest. In the baroque courtyard you can see one of the finest beer gardens in Bavaria, where you can enjoy one of Weltenburg´s famous beers, brewed in the oldest monastic brewery in the world.
