The original Gate was built in the 13th century. In 1809 all three defensive towers were reconstructed to look alike, and the gabled roof was replaced with the current form. In 1868 the old gate house located at the base of the tower was demolished.
On the tower you can see a painting by the artist Georg Lickleder, depicting the capture of the master butcher and freedom fighter, Matthias Kraus, in 1705 (see Matthias-Kraus-Memorial).
