Nature reserve "Schulerloch"

The rocks along the Altmühl are the riff reformations of the Jura-sea which was spreaded there 150 million years ago. The rocks look so solid but this is deception. The rocks have a lot of caves wich were used in the stone age to live. The cave "Schulerloch" was used from Stone age men. Nowadays the "Schulerloch" is visitable in the warm seaons. In the winter the cave is an importnant place for endangered bat species to winter.

1968 the nature reserve "Schulerloch" got decleared with a area of 12,6 hectare.

At the sunny side ot the Altmühl-entrance grows a close chalk-beech grove.
