Otto’s Chapel

In the Old Market Square, in front of Otto’s Chapel, there is a granite block with an iron cross marking the spot where, on September 16, 1231, Duke Ludwig I the Kelheimer, was assassinated on his way to the castle. The assassin was never identi-fied. His son Otto, who one year later became Duke Otto the Exalted, demolished the gate and bridge that stood on the spot. In remembrance of his father, he had the chapel and a hospital built in honor of St. John. On the north wall you can see a Romanesque portal that was placed here during the renovation in 1602.
